David M. Peña-Guzmán, Ph.D.
David specializes in European philosophy, the history and philosophy of science, and the philosophy of animal minds. He is interested in the problem of consciousness, the study of lived experience, and the value of the humanities. David lives in the Mission neighborhood in San Francisco, California and is Associate Professor of Humanities at San Francisco State University. He has previously worked at Johns Hopkins University, Laurentian University, Dillard University, and Emory University (where he received his Ph.D. in 2015).
Ellie Anderson, Ph.D.
Ellie is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Pomona College. She is the co-creator of Overthink podcast and YouTube channel, a top-rated philosophy podcast she has hosted with David Peña-Guzmán since November 2020. Ellie also posts video lectures and writing on her Substack, and is the host of Crash Course’s Political Theory series on YouTube. Her scholarly research focuses on gender dynamics in loving relationships, non-monogamy and sexual ethics, relational selfhood, and existentialism. Her work, especially the concept of hermeneutic labor, has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Slate, The Huffington Post, and more. She has published over a dozen academic articles, and her first book, The Relational Self: A Phenomenology of Ambiguity will be published by Northwestern University Press in May 2027. She is currently working on a book on love and friendship for a non-academic audience. She received her Ph.D. in 2016 from Emory University, and her B.A. from Trinity College in Hartford, CT in 2011. She lives in Los Angeles.
